Don Quichotte by Salman Rushdie: Goodreads Review
I am in total agreement with the Ron Charles’ review (Washington Post). Sometimes I wonder if Rushdie isn’t terribly insecure, since he seems to be on an eternal quest to impress his readers with his wit. He seems to be too clever by half. Unfortunately, this cleverness comes at the expense of emotional substance. I didn’t find myself liking or even empathizing with any of the characters of this book. I once heard someone say (and I’m paraphrasing), “God respects those who think, but loves those who sing.” Yes, it’s easy to respect Rushdie –I don’t mess with his IQ; but love him (at least for this book), well, that’s another story. I’ll stick with Cervantes any day.
